Staff Android Engineer (freelance/perm)

    • New York

Job description

Are you an Android developer who thrives on tackling complex mobile experiences in the payments space?

For a long-term project with a leading payments company, DNA.inc is looking for a Staff Android Engineer to build modern, scalable applications. You’ll work closely with client teams — engineers, designers, and product specialists — to strengthen their internal capabilities and deliver robust, quality-driven platforms.

About the job

In this role, you will lead a team of Android engineers to build high-quality, reliable Android applications for one of DNA.inc’s marquee clients. Our teams often work directly within client teams, ensuring close collaboration and shared ownership of product quality and outcomes. Deep technical expertise, combined with strong communication and leadership skills will be required.

Among other things, we will look to you to:

  • Own and shape the technical vision, architecture and engineering practices across multiple Android projects/teams.

  • Define shared libraries, coding standards, modular architecture, CI/CD pipelines and release processes.

  • Lead cross-team architecture and platform decisions: scalability, performance, maintainability, modularization.

  • Mentor and coach engineers; perform system-level code reviews; raise code quality and consistency across teams.

  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, QA and other stakeholders to align technical roadmap with business goals, prioritize platform initiatives, evaluate trade-offs.

  • Investigate and pilot new Android frameworks, tools, or architectural approaches; drive adoption and best practices.

  • Monitor and improve engineering health: reduce technical debt, improve delivery speed, maintain long-term stability as user base and codebase grow.

Job requirements

About you

To be considered a candidate for this role, we expect you to:

  • Have 10+ years of professional Android (or mobile) development experience, including Kotlin and modern Android practices (coroutines, reactive programming, modularization, etc.).

  • Demonstrate a track record working with large or multiple codebases, ideally across several teams or projects.

  • Exhibit strong architectural design and system-level thinking: able to design scalable, maintainable, modular Android applications; document and drive architectural decisions.

  • Know how to mentor and coach other engineers; strong code review skills.

  • Be able to work cross-functionally (product, design, operations) and influence without formal authority.

  • Leverage a strategic mindset: able to anticipate long-term challenges (scale, performance, technical debt) and propose effective solutions.

  • Demonstrate a passion for engineering quality, tooling, maintainability, and team-wide standards.

  • Ideally based in or around New York City. Although this role is primarily a remote or hybrid position, periodic on-site presence with our client will be expected

  • Bonus: experience in CI/CD, release pipelines, modular architecture, or cross-platform mobile strategy; familiarity with domain-specific areas (e.g. payments, media/streaming) is a plus.
